The Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9 digit number that you need to work in Canada or to have access to government programs and benefits.
A SIN is issued to one person only and it cannot legally be used by anyone else. You are responsible for protecting your SIN. Store any document containing your SIN and personal information in a safe place—do not keep your SIN with you.
Service Canada is now issuing SINs in paper format (confirmation of SIN letter). Production of the plastic SIN card has stopped, however, SIN cards that are not expired and are currently in circulation can still be used.
If you are a parent of a newborn, you can apply for your child’s SIN through the Newborn Registration Service.
If you are an employer, learn about your responsibilities related to your employees’ SINs.
2. Eligibility
If you are a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a temporary resident, you need a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to work in Canada or to receive benefits and services from government programs.
Children who are 12 years of age or older may apply for their own SIN.
Parents and individuals who are legally authorized to act on behalf of the applicant (for example, a legal guardian or legal representative) can also apply for a SIN for children under the age of majority in their province, and adults in their care.
3. What you need before you apply
To apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN), to request a confirmation of your SIN or to amend your SIN record, you must provide a valid primary document that proves your identity and legal status in Canada.
To obtain a confirmation of your SIN or to amend your SIN record in person at a Service Canada Centre, you must bring one to two valid, government-issued identification documents (ID) with you.
If the name indicated on your primary document is different than the name you are currently using, you must also provide supporting documents.
If you are applying for someone else, you may need to provide additional documents.
4. How to apply
Applying in person
To apply for your SIN, to obtain a confirmation of your SIN or to amend your SIN record, simply gather all the required original documents and take them to the nearest Service Canada office.
When you want to access your file at a Service Canada Centre, you must show one government-issued photo ID (with legal name, date of birth and/or your signature) or two IDs. If you present two IDs both must contain your legal name and one of the following: your date of birth, photo or signature. You may also be asked verification questions.
If everything is in order, you will get your SIN during your visit and you will not need to part with your documents.
Special measures are in place to accommodate individuals who cannot apply in person at a Service Canada office.
Applying by mail
Only individuals in these circumstances are permitted to apply by mail:
- Individuals living 100 km or more from the nearest Service Canada office, in an inaccessible area or where outreach is very infrequent may apply by mail. To determine if you are eligible to apply for a SIN by mail, please enter your residential postal code in the box below and click “Submit”.

- Individuals who have other extenuating limitations that prevent them from visiting a Service Canada point of service and who cannot use the assistance of another individual to submit an application on their behalf may be eligible to apply by mail. Note: Individuals must call 1-800-206-7218 and select option 3 to determine if they are eligible to apply by mail.
- Individuals applying from outside Canada.
What you need to apply by mail:
A completed SIN application form (if you are unable to print the application form, you can order the form by phone at 1-506-548-7961; long distance charges apply).
The required original documents.

Canada If you send your application by registered mail, we will return your document(s) in the same way. Service Canada is not responsible for documents lost in the mail.
If your SIN application meets the requirements, you will receive a letter with your SIN by mail within 20 business days from the date the application is received. If more than 25 business days have passed and you would like to find out the status of your application, contact the SIN program.

شماره ملی کانادا (SIN) “سین نامبر” یک شماره 9 رقمی منحصر بفرد است که به هر فرد اختصاص داده میشود. این شماره برای شناسایی افرادی که در کانادا کار می کنند و افرادیکه نیاز به استفاده از مزایا و خدمات دولتی کانادا دارند بکار برده میشود . همه تازه واردین به کانادا ملزم به درخواست این شماره می باشند. دریافت این کارت هیچ گونه هزینه ای ندارد. توجه داشته باشید که ارائه این کارت به دیگران می تواند باعث افشا شدن اطلاعات هویتی شما گردد! این کارت به زبان
فرانسه numéro d’assurance sociale نامیده می شود. از March 31,2014 صدور کارت های پلاستیکی متوقف شده است و به جای آن برگه کاغذی confirmation of SIN letter ارائه می شود.
اگر با ویزای کار در کانادا هستید اولین رقم با 9 شروع می شود و در قسمت پایین کارت تاریخ اعتبار درج شده است که باید قبل از انقضاء آن را تمدید کنید.
چگونگی تقاضای کارت سین نامبر :
برای دریافت SIN کارت ، باید طبق مراحل زیر اقدام نمایید :
فرم درخواست SIN را پر کنید ،
یکی از مدارک قید شده در ذیل را آماده نمایید،
فرم تکمیل شده و مدرک خود را به نزدیکترین مرکز خدمات کانادا (Service Canda Centre) یا (Human Resources Development Canada Center)ارائه نمایید.
برای درخواست SIN باید یکی از مدارک زیر را ارائه نمایید :
کارت اقامت دائم (PR Card) صادر شده توسط اداره تابعیت و مهاجرت کانادا ،
مدرک تاییدیه اقامت دائم (IMM 5292) و ویزای کانادا که به پاسپورت شما الصاق شده باشد ،
سابقه حضور در کانادا (اگر قبل از 28 ژوئن سال 2002 وارد شده اید)
پس از ارائه فرم درخواست و مدرک ذکر شده ، چنانچه مدرک و فرم درخواست کامل باشد ، شماره SIN ، در همان ملاقات اول به شما اعلام خواهد شد و کارت SIN ، طی ده روز کاری به آدرس شما ارسال خواهد شد .
چنانچه مایل به درخواست SIN ، از طریق پست باشید ، میتوانید مراحل زیر را دنبال کنید:

اگر طبق قانون یا بواسطه ازدواج نام خود را تغییر دادید، 60 روز فرصت دارید تا برای دریافت SIN جدید اقدام کنید.
افرادی که از دنیا رفته اند و ساکن ساسکاچوان و یا خارج از کانادا بوده اند بهتر است، فامیل آنها نسبت به اطلاع به اداره SIN کانادا اقدام کنند. بقیه استانهای کانادا به صورت آنلاین این اطلاعات توسط سازمان ها داده خواهد شد.
نکته امنیتی:
در صورت استفاده از خدمات پستی برای درخواست SIN ، بهتر است برای ارسال مدارک، از پست سفارشی استفاده نمایید .
والدین یا قیم قانونی، میتوانند برای کودکان زیر 12 سال خود کارتSIN درخواست نمایند ، افراد 12 سال به بالا میتوانند شخصا کارت SIN را درخواست نمایند .
بعضی از افراد و یا دارندگان مشاغل ممکن است از شما ، شماره SIN شما را سوال نمایند ، توجه داشته باشید اینکار قانونی نیست و بشدت نهی شده است .
هر شماره SIN منحصرا برای یک فرد مشخص صادر میگردد و استفاده از آن توسط افراد دیگر غیر قانونی میباشد. شماره SIN شما محرمانه است و شما مسئول حفاظت و جلوگیری از استفاده غیر متعارف ، جعل و یا بسرقت رفتن آن میباشید . توصیه میشود کارت SIN خود را با خود حمل نکنید و آنرا در محلی امن نگهداری نمایید.
موارد استفاده از شماره بیمه همگانی(SIN)
شما در موارد زیر ملزم به استفاده از SIN میباشید :
شروع کار در یک شغل جدید
پر کردن فرم مالیات بر درآمد
تقاضا برای مزایای دولتی ( مانند بیمه اشتغال یا مزایای مالیاتی برای فرزندان)
درخواست برای وام دانشجویی در کانادا
برخی از مواردیکه که ارائه SIN لازم نیست بشرح زیر است:
